Suriname with Cynthia McLeod is intended for travelers who are looking for a meaningful journey. Be prepared to take in the history, ethnic diversity, architecture, and consciously preserved ecology of Suriname and become enamored by the country's unique cultural and religious tolerance. On this trip, participants may also realize opportunities for deeper personal immersion through educational, intellectual, and institutional studies.

Saturday 10/6 (Arrival)

  • Shuttle from Hato Airport, Willemstad, Curaçao to hotel in city center
  • Beach and/or sightseeing

Sunday 10/7

  • Visit to the Slavery Museum

  • Depart from Hato Airport, Willemstad, Curaçao; arrive at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, Paramaribo, Suriname

  • Shuttle to hotel in Paramaribo

  • Dinner*

Monday 10/8

  • Breakfast

  • Central Market: Get a taste of the authenticity and diversity of the culture and interact with Surinamese people

  • Koto Museum: This little museum, showcasing something positive and beautiful that arose from slavery, offers a great lesson in social history through fashion. Features a display of traditional clothing and head kerchiefs worn by the Creole women, with some garments dating back to the 1860s

  • Back to hotel in Paramaribo

  • Lunch*

  • Free time

  • Dinner at a Javanese Restaurant at Blauwgrond

Tuesday 10/9

  • Breakfast
  • Historical plantation bus tour to Fort New Amsterdam, an open air museum
  • Marienburg: A former sugar estate with a history of many plantations uproars. See Memorial for those who were killed in the biggest uproar in 1902 
  • Tamansari: An authentic Javanese Dessa

  • Lunch at Tamansari

  • Arrive at hotel
  • Dinner*

Wednesday 10/10

  • Breakfast
  • Depart by bus for Joden Savanna: A Jewish settlement established around 1650 in the jungle along the Suriname River. Sights include:
    • Ruins of the first synagogue built in the western hemisphere
  • Depart for eco and cultural river resort, Berg en Dal
  • Lunch; sightseeing, optional historic walk
  • Dinner
  • Lecture by Cynthia McLeod on the history of plantation time

Thursday 10/11

  • Breakfast
  • Depart for Atjoni; boat trip to Anaula: Island on the Upper Suriname River boasting diverse flora and fauna, virgin rainforest, turbulent rapids, and maroon culture
  • Lunch; rest, optional sightseeing of the island
  • Boat trip, rapids, swimming
  • Evening boat ride
  • Dinner
  • Maroon cultural event

Friday 10/12

  • Breakfast
  • New Aurora: Get acquainted with the local population of this Maroon village of the rainforest
  • Back to Anaula
  • Lunch
  • Depart for Paramaribo
  • Arrive at hotel in Paramaribo

Cost

$2350 (Double occupancy)

A reservation is held with a $705 deposit per traveler. To complete the booking, the balance of $1645 per traveler is due 30 days before the tour begins.
