  • Central Market: Get a taste of the authenticity and diversity of the culture and interact with Surinamese people

  • Koto Museum: This little museum, showcasing something positive and beautiful that arose from slavery, offers a great lesson in social history through fashion. Features a display of traditional clothing and head kerchiefs worn by the Creole women, with some garments dating back to the 1860s

  • Marienburg: A former sugar estate with a history of many plantations uproars. See Memorial for those who were killed in the biggest uproar in 1902

  • Depart by bus for Joden Savanna: A Jewish settlement established around 1650 in the jungle along the Suriname River. Sights include:
    • Ruins of the first synagogue built in the western hemisphere
  • Depart for eco and cultural river resort, Berg en Dal
  • Lunch; sightseeing, optional historic walk
  • Dinner
  • Lecture by Cynthia McLeod on the history of plantation time

Thursday 10/11

  • Depart for Atjoni; boat trip to Anaula: Island on the Upper Suriname River boasting diverse flora and fauna, virgin rainforest, turbulent rapids, and maroon culture
  • Lunch; rest, optional sightseeing of the island

  • New Aurora: Get acquainted with the local population of this Maroon village of the rainforest
